Top 10 v4.2: Smoother setup, better multisite insights, smarter tracking

Top 10 has always had a straightforward mission: track post views accurately and make it easy to highlight the content your visitors actually care about.

Over time, the plugin has grown to handle more use cases – larger sites, multisite networks, higher traffic, and more complex setups. That growth brought power, but it also meant more configuration and more places where things could quietly drift away from “set it and forget it”.

Top 10 v4.2.0 focuses on improving that experience. Setup is more straightforward, statistics are easier to access (particularly on multisite installations), and Pro users get several new tools aimed squarely at high-traffic and multisite environments. There is also a solid amount of internal work in this release to improve performance, reliability, and long-term maintainability.

A smoother start with the new Settings Wizard

Top 10 has never been short on options. That flexibility is intentional, but it can make the initial setup feel heavier than it needs to be.

Top 10 v4.2.0 introduces a new Settings Wizard that walks you through the most essential configuration choices step by step. Instead of jumping between tabs and guessing what matters, you can get the core tracking and display settings right from the start.

The Wizard is beneficial in two everyday situations:

  1. New Installations: Helps you get started quickly without manually reviewing each setting.
  2. Existing Sites: It provides a straightforward way to review your configuration.

You can rerun the Wizard at any time from the bottom of the Settings screen.

Advanced options remain fully accessible. The Wizard aims to reduce friction, not hide complexity.

Pro features designed for scale and control

I built Top 10 Pro for sites that need better control over tracking, performance, and multisite management. Version 4.2.0 adds several features aimed directly at those scenarios.

Network-wide statistics for multisite

If you manage a multisite network, you already know the drill: switching between sites just to understand the performance of your posts gets old quickly.

Top 10 Pro v4.2.0 adds a network-wide dashboard that displays aggregated popular post statistics across all sites in the network. The dashboard looks and feels the same as the single-site dashboard. Pro users can click on any bar of the chart to view the popular posts of the day.

For networks with a shared editorial direction or multiple active sites, this turns the data into actionable insights.

High-traffic tracking with configuration validation

On busy sites, tracking needs to remain accurate without becoming a bottleneck. Top 10 Pro already includes the Fast Tracker, which reduces tracking overhead by bypassing much of WordPress, unlike traditional tracking approaches.

Version 4.2.0 introduces a High-Traffic tracking mode, designed specifically for sites that experience sustained heavy load or sudden traffic spikes. Rather than chasing marginal per-request speed improvements, the High-Traffic tracker prioritises consistency, reliability, and predictable behaviour under pressure.

In real-world environments, Fast Tracker and High-Traffic Tracker often show similar single-request latency. The difference becomes apparent as traffic increases. The High-Traffic tracker avoids WordPress entirely, reduces memory usage per request, and minimises the risk of tracking failures when the server is under stress.

To support this, Top 10 Pro also includes a configuration status panel that validates the High-Traffic tracker setup and highlights potential issues before they affect your data.

If you run a high-traffic site, experience periodic traffic bursts, or want tracking that remains reliable even when your server is under load, the High-Traffic tracker is a key reason to upgrade to Top 10 Pro.

Copy settings between multisite sites

Keeping Top 10’s settings consistent across a multisite network can be tedious and error-prone.

You can copy settings from one site to multiple sites, with clear selection for both source and destination.

This tool simplifies deploying a known-good configuration to new sites or standardising behaviour across an existing network.

Network Administrators can find this setting under Top 10 > Import/Export in the Network Admin area.

“Top 10 Views Overview” dashboard widget

Sometimes you do not need the full statistics page—you just want to know if something has changed.

A new compact Top 10 Views Overview widget adds a small views-over-time chart to the WordPress Dashboard, making it easier to spot spikes or emerging trends at a glance.

Control over the Admin Bar menu

Top 10 Pro includes an Admin Bar menu for quick access to view counts, tools, and cache clearing.

In v4.2.0, you can now turn off the Admin Bar menu entirely. Use this on sites where the admin bar needs to stay minimal, or where access should be more tightly controlled.

Override data retention without custom code

Top 10 stores daily view data will be retained for 180 days in the “daily” tables if scheduled maintenance is activated.

With v4.2.0, Pro users can override the data retention period directly from the Maintenance settings, without editing constants or adding custom code. The default behaviour remains unchanged, but this provides more flexibility for sites that need longer historical data or reduced storage.

Other improvements

This release also includes several general improvements:

  • Improved dashboard chart click-throughs, allowing the Popular Posts screen to open filtered to a specific day (Pro).
  • Updated the WebberZone Settings API to version 2.7.1.
  • Improved the media handler with better recursion protection and more robust processing. The media handler also adds suppot for the FIFU plugin. Images set by FIFU are used if no featured image is set.
  • Improved Tools page statistics display and caching.
  • Updated the Import/Export and Tools sections for a more consistent admin UI.

Developer and internal changes

A significant part of this release also focuses on internal improvements.

The queries for popular posts have been restructured to enhance performance and ensure compatibility with WordPress VIP-style environments.

Dynamic exclusionsOpens in a new window are now applied after cached results are retrieved, ensuring consistent behaviour across widgets, blocks, shortcodes, feeds, and the REST API. If you are creating your own display for popular posts using Top_Ten_Query, you will need to manage post exclusion independently.

Database responsibilities have been moved into a dedicated Database class, improving separation of concerns and long-term maintainability.

I have also updated the bundled Freemius SDK to version 2.13.0.

Fixes

Top 10 v4.2.0 includes the following fixes:

  • Fixed Top_Ten_Query handling of the date_query argument.
  • Fixed activation redirects on single-site installs within multisite networks.
  • Fixed exclude_current_post behaviour when caching is enabled.
  • Fixed live-edit count updates in multisite statistics.

Download, upgrade, and support

Top 10 Pro v4.2.0 is available now.

Existing users can update directly from the WordPress dashboard. Documentation and usage guides are available in the Top 10 knowledge base.

If you are using the free version, this release is also a good opportunity to try the new Settings Wizard and decide whether the Pro features make sense for your site.
